Any other things do you think we need to bring?

I am not sure about the internet but her is a link that helped me a lot.
UC Berkeley Fall 2008 - Residence Hall Move In

laptop/desktop with ethernet port + cord.

Are there still any laptops that don't have an ethernet port already installed? It seems like evey modern laptop has a phone jack.

will a 13foot ethernet cord suffice? it's for a room in the units thanks!

Every modern laptop should have an ethernet port. Old laptops have phone jacks ;)

umm yea.. pretty much every laptop nowadays have a ethernet port and wireless card built it.
13 foot is enough.. i would say. ;)

they recommend 25 feet long. helps because then you can bring it all over your room like onto ur bed.

does it have internet access all around the campus?

Wow so there's really no WIFI in the Units? I'm really bummed out that I'm paying 10k+ a year to live with 3 guys in a room smaller than mine, yet we are not getting WIFI in the DORMS?
Can I bring a wireless router and connect it to the ports in the Units? Unit 3 to be exact.

Airbears is wireless internet but is in only certain parts of the campus.

There is the free wireless service called AirBears for students all around campus. You just connect, go to a browser, and authenticate with your Calnet ID and password. However, AirBears doesn't reach to the dorms. The dorms do have free wireless from Rescomp (Residential Computing). Like AirBears, you just have to go to a browser and authenticate with Calnet ID and password (note you don't have to live in the dorms to use Rescomp wireless, just a student). But Rescomp only reaches the ground floor and maybe the 1st or 2nd floor of the respective dorm unit.

In Unit 2, the Rescomp is based on 5th floor so you get almost no wifi if you're not near the 5th floor. Also, you must log in every 2 hours which is a pain.

sorry to temporarily jack thread, but has anyone tried using ipod touch wifi with airbears? I know sometimes the itouch won't connect if you need to enter a password, so just wonderin.

kncool - Yes, you can use a wireless router.

Yea, lots of people use wireless routers to create their own access points. There's gotta be at least one person doing it on every floor.

And in some buildings, there are access points in some of the floor lounges. But, these are rather weak, and as the above poster noted, you probably won't be able to connect from even your own room.

As far as iPod touch connecting, it should work. I connect all the time with my iPhone on campus and never had a problem.

I am very inept with computers and was wondering what ISP the school provides for people who live in the dorms? Also, I was wondering that if you are lazy could you just get one of those rescomp people to set up everything for you?

from a little pamphlet I got in the mail about Berkeezy's internet:

"If you would like wireless access in your own room or apartment, you can puchase a wireless router froma com. suppy store and set up your own wireless network. RCCs can provide assistance with setting up your wireless router..."

I'm not sure what ISP the dorms use, or if it even is a commercial ISP. But in any case, getting connected is very straightforward and easy. You just attend a mandatory connect session with Rescomp and register the MAC address of your computer with them. If you miss it, you can always register it with them later or do it online at the Rescomp site yourself.

cal was one of the original sites of the Internet and also involved in expiremental next Gen links. Cal itself is the "ISP".
