where do we get the cable for T1? connection after we move in? At the front desk of our dorm or at the S.T.C?

you can get it anywhere you want - all you need is a normal Cat5 network cable. STC sells them - the front desk does not.

Other then Sophos is there anything else we have to stick on our computers to get onto the Network?

just buy 1 its like a buck or 2 from anywhere; and whats a sopho?

i think we need to dl this little app that updates our computer on a schedule.

Sophos is the name of the antivirus application.

i just found a really long cat5 cable laying around. it has to be like 50 feet or more. lol. and it was the shorter of the two that i found. i have like a 6 footer, but i dont know if thats long enough...especially if i end up moving my desk around or something.

what and where is the STC? and how much do the cat5 cables cost? also, how do we dl sophos?

http://www.resnet.ucla.edu has the answers to all of your questions. just poke around there. (namely store info, price list, and AV security)

i also found this right now from poking around just now...
http://www.resnet.ucla.edu/ResNetReg/avoptions.asp

it says people with Win XP SP2 dont need sophos as long as they have a current AV program with real time monitoring and automatic updates...

The STC is next to Puzzles, across from Covel. Cat5 cables are $5 for a decent length of cabling, but you shouldn't need more than 6 feet. The Sophos download is automatically set as a temporary home page for your browser when you first connect to the residential network, so you just have to follow the page and proceed to the download link.

Ok, thanks guys.

To the poster that was worried that 50 ft wouldn't be enough, think about this:

The room itself is about 10ft by 10ft (maybe more, but not much.) In essence, you could stretch that cable around the whole perimeter of the room and back to where you started. There's no way that 50ft will be deficient.

i didnt say i thought 50 ft wasnt enough. thats like wider than my garage! i was worried the 6 ft might not be enough, but the next longest cable i have is a 50 footer.

Up until now I didn't even know UCLA carried 50-foot Ethernet cables. What kind of student needs to sit 50 feet away from an Ethernet jack? Not even the biggest Xbox LAN party last year was that large...

oh, they dont. the longest the STC has on their price list is 30 ft. the 50 footer is from my house. lol.

Well, the 50 footer might be fun, if only to plug it into your neighbors room and **** them off. :D

do i need an av if i've got a mac?

Linux and Mac
Linux and Mac users must install and maintain an Anti-virus of their choice (Sophos is recommended). STCPM is not available as yet for these operating systems. An STCPM client is currently under development and will be mandatory as soon as it is released.

Cross your fingers and hope that it's later rather than sooner, 'cause Sophos is crap.

is there a reason sophos doesnt appear on the d/l list? is it not yet availible or something?

LOL, im bringing a 50 foot ethernet patch cord too!
