Anyone please help?

No, prior experience is not required, but it can be helpful, especially during interviews.

Would you say it is common though? What % of people in Boutiques/BBs had previous experience in finance (estimation)?

And if they did, what did it usually consist of?

How would you land such an internship? connections?

I have heard (i don’t have much physical evidence to back it up, only talking to Wharton upperclassmen) that the best way to get your foot in the door for a BB internship for junior year is to have finance experience from sophomore year. After going though Penn’s recruiting last year, it seems that almost all banks that recruit on campus want juniors. In fact, the only sophomore opportunities were for sophomore specifiic programs like the externships. Even so, freshmen and sophomores still find themselves jobs at botique banks and hedge funds. Most of the people I talked to who landed those positions (in Wharton and non Wharton) got them through connections. There are a few who are able to find those positions on their own without a parent or family friend helping them along.
