Interning at Goldman Sachs

So I just got a summer internship at GS. What's it like to work there?

What division/program?

Investment Banking. My boyfriend has one in Technology, and I'd like to know more about that too.

Read Lisa Endlich's "Goldman Sachs: The Culture of Success" in its 2000 year paperback version. If I remain correct on GS, as of a few years back, they quiz you on this book during your internship.

Also: Investopedia, Vault Guide to Investment Banking, Accidental Investment Banker, Liar's Poker, Monkey Business

IBD in NYC is very prestigious. You get to work on BIG deals. My friend worked on the 3M deal summer '06.

What do you have to do to get considered for an intership at GS?

Be at a target school and perform well in the interview. Also, being good-looking helps (that applies to life as well).

Also, how easy is it to move around divisions at GS? My boyfriend, who's working in the Technology division, really wants to work in Investment Banking. What can he do to do this?
Another question - how easy is it for me to get another internship there next year?

Is the internship paid?

yes, it is paid

don't think IT guys can get into ibank easily. at least not in the first couple years.

oh really? but why not?

hey lucyS, how did you find out that you got the internship? did they call you?

yes, they called me

Goldman Sachs investment banking internships are pretty much the most prestigious IBanking internships on Wall Street.

Congratulations. I'm sure the reason why its difficult to transfer from Technology to ibanking is that they have different hiring criteria for different divisions. Plus, it might not be a bad idea to not work in the same office as your BF. ;)

I'm pretty sure Goldman Sachs IBD is much more difficult to get into then technology. It doesn't even compare.

I'm sure there are many people in technology who would like to switch to ibd. Your boyfriend probably won't be successful.

foxdie, do you go around spouting crap. her boyfriend won't be successful. how do you know this and where do you even work that gives you this much credibility???

back to the main topic, i just had a superday at goldman sachs for their ibd internship. I don't go to a target school. I have an average gpa but i have a lot of drive to succeed which has been shown in the different steps i've taken in life. All these crap about target schools and wannabe ibankers that keep talking crap, people need to really get lives. I have an offer from another BB for this summer. Hopefully, i would hear from gs.

Copy my full quote. I meant the boyfriend probably won't be successful in switiching to ibd. I don't think anybody is going to argue with this; technology doesn't even have anything to do with ibd.

many people want to get out of the "geek track" of IT. however it can be quite challenging.

one path i have heard of is work in IT for a couple years, do a "MFE" degree (presumably your bf has some math/science background), and get into sales&trading as a quant person.

there are several part-time MFE's in nyc: CMU, NYU, and Baruch. There is also a full time at Columbia.

that is probably his best bet.

What sort of tasks do you daily when interning at major firms such as GS?
