Internship at NIH

I have been accepted into the Internship program at NIH. Is it going to improve my college admission?

Definitely! - and congratulations. :)

Wow, how many people does that program take? I would have tried to get in, but I'm not 16 yet :(

Which program were you accepted to? In my experience, some are better than others, and some very special programs open lots of doors to top colleges and scholarhip opportunities.

Take the internship seriously, dedicate yourself to and perform some serious research (assuming you will have a research internship and not a "test-tube cleaner" internship), and that will help even more than simply having been accepted to work there.

Because it's not very selective. Getting a position at NIH is mostly based on connections; kids of NIH employees are nearly guaranteed a position.

Unless you're talking about the HHMI internship... that's a different story! Much more prestigious, but still not going to make your application.

HHMI got me into Penn.....

The program only accept 20 students.

Venkat89,

Do you have another stuffs to get you into Penn besides the internship? Does HHMI stands for Howard Hughes Medical Internship?

I got accepted into the HHMI. It is going to be a year long program. When school starts in Fall, I will be half day in shcool and working at NIH in the afternoon.

I HATE your question....National Institute of HEALTH...are you doing it for college admission or because you really are interesting in health issues

THAT should be your priority when interning at a place such as that, not how it looks

If you hate my question, you should have ignored it why you replied.

Obviously if someone is going to spend hours of their own day interning at a health institute, they are going to be INTERESTED in health issues. Durr.

I have a few national level awards, a bunch of clubs, and legacy at Penn, so that all helped, but HHMI probably helped me separate myself the most. HHMI only guarantees you admission to UMD, but will help a lot at every single other school, but none are guarantees and you will need top grades, SATs, and other awards and activities. PM me any questions you have about the program.

Because I find the idea of dong something to just look good is not right, especailly when it comes to peoples' health

sorry, why ask the question if you are doing something you are really interested in and love...if it made no difference on your applications, would you still do it?

It is something you need to ask yourself

We see so many students asking if something will look good, while not even thinking if it will be fun, useful, edcuational, etc

That mindset needs to change
