Internship dilemma: transportation

Hi,

I'm a college junior. Right now, I have zero internship experience, but I have experience in various clubs/organization, had an on-campus job last year and a summer job this summer, and a stellar GPA (3.97). I am planning to continue my involvement in clubs, contribute writings to various publications on-campus, and keep up my grades. I am also planning to study abroad next semester, so I'm taking 18 credits (a full load) this semester so that I don't fall behind on graduating on time. My dilemma is that I want to do an internship this fall. One has emailed me back for an interview, but it is located more than 30 minutes from my apartment. I don't have a car or bike, so I'd be walking 1+ hour every day just to get there and back. Is it worth it? I'm worried about getting lost, getting assaulted if I end up coming home late, etc. Should I just go in for an interview and see what happens? I don't want to take on all these things and end up spreading myself super thin. Do I NEED an internship this semester? Opinions?

I assume 30 minutes means 30 minutes by car. If that is the case, it is way too far to walk. I recommend you either get an used bike or pass up this potential opportunity.

Are there other students from your university who might also be interning there the same quarter? Could you pay them gas money? Also, is there anyone in your extended family who could lend you a car for a quarter?

Finally, are there other internship opportunities that are closer to campus? Also consider seeking out a research opportunity with a professor.

You don’t have a car or bike, meaning you don’t have either of those things right now … I bought my bike in college for $25 (and when that fell apart, I bought another one for $50) off of Craigslist. Why not do that? Then the only reasons not to do the internship are if it’s not really an internship or if you can’t handle it with 18 credits.

What will you do as a senior graduate with a “stellar” GPA and graduating on time with no experience? Buy a bike or take the bus. How can you afford to study abroad but no transportation at home? An internship in the major is very important vs. being a club member in a variety of clubs. That wont pay your bills.

If it’s 30 minutes walk each way, that’s really not that much. As long as it’s a safe route, I’d do it (and maybe spring for a cab for the odd late occasion). But don’t do it if it would put yourself at risk.
