would this make me want to defenestrate myself?

no, unless you can’t handle it. can you? what classes are you taking? how far is the internship from your school/house? how many hours a week?

i took on research, two clubs and a school election my junior year in high school with 3 AP’s and a few honors classes. the result? i couldn’t excel at any of the things listed because I was spread too thin. and i got home at 10 pm every night. do i regret it? hell no. i’d do it all over again in a heartbeat. my advice to you: do it ONLY if you are really interested in what you are doing (don’t do it to pad your college application; frankly, they’ll be more interested in a higher GPA than in a passionless extracurricular - they’ll see right through your internship if you aren’t really into it). and of course, do it only if you can still do well in your classes. i managed an A overall, but it came at the expense of sleep. i averaged 3 hours a night all year.

it really comes down to your interest in the internship. if you are really into it, by all means do it. just learn to balance your schedule, and you should be able to get through what will likely be a rough year.

tip - make a layout of what your daily schedule will be like for about a week next year. list when you get up / sleep, all your activities, estimated homework load/time, when you’ll need social time / when you go to the gym or whatever. it should help paint a picture of what it’ll be like.

hope it helped

How do you GET internships at such a young age, anyhow?

You just need to learn how to ask around. I’ve had one since summer going into sophomore year…been in a couple hours on a weekly basis since then.

I wouldnt do it if I were you… I’ve seen a lot of GPA screw ups that way… also you will have no social life, and might get burnt out by stress. this raises a red flag

Yes you can do it… but it depends on how committed you are. Last fall (my junior year) I took on an internship and worked an average of 60 hours a week on it through October. Then I had school (4 APs, rest honors) and was practicing 2+ hours a day for tennis and traveling and competing every other weekend. When I was at home I was always gone in the morning and back at midnight or later.

The result? These three things were my whole life. No sleep, no social life, but I still had fun and loved it. It was an exhilarating and amazing experience that I don’t regret in the least. Not only did I gain life experience that will be extremely helpful in the future, but I learned how to work incredibly efficiently and how to push my limits. I still got straight As. Since then everything’s a breeze because I’m so much more efficient and I have a ton of free time. So moral of the story I say go for it as long as you’re passionate about the things you’re doing and motivated.
