Is it possible to get an investment banking/hedge fund/private equity internship the summer of your freshman year of college? Coming from a good school (Northwestern) and majoring in econ? I know there a goldman sachs and jp morgan program, but any others? How would you go about asking a local boutique? thanks

I'm sticking to a local Merrill Lynch office.

I would suggest sending out dozens of resumes and cover letters to hedge funds in your area. Many funds are cutting paid staff, but need someone to do administrative tasks in the interim. This is a great way to get your foot in the door. You might even want to get a basic hedge fund contact list because funds can be very hard to locate.

Other than that, the main thing is to stay persistant and make sure they know you are willing to do whatever you can to help the firm.

those JPM and GS programs are mainly for URMs…very few of them even get accepted anyway. Just do something business related that will be hands on…learn and make connections. For example Im a freshman, and I’m doing PWM work in a UBS local office. The rotationals are soph yr, junior year is big nuts.
