Internship in a related field?

I searched this forum, but didn't see any posts (that I found) relevant to my question, so: I just got a callback for a summer internship at an engineering firm pretty close to home. The thing is, the position emphasizes architectural engineering, and I'm majoring in mechanical. (I just sent in a resume and asked if they had any internships available--I have mechE on my resume, but didn't specify it in the email.) My question is, is it better to have internship experience in ANY engineering field rather than none, or should I keep looking for a position that's more suited towards mechanical engineers?

If it makes any difference, I'm a rising sophomore, and my school doesn't even offer architectural engineering if I wanted to go that route. As of right now, I'm more interested in product design than anything else.

Senior in M.E. and I’d say any engineering experience is better than none at all. As long as companies can see that you’re trying and getting experience especially early (sophomore year) then it is a good thing. Who knows, maybe you’ll enjoy what you do so much that you’ll want to work for the architectural engineering firm.

Also doesn’t hurt that it is close to home. Maybe you could live at home for another summer to save on other expenses related to housing, food, etc…
