Internship in Thailand vs. Local Internship

I am having a really though time deciding between 2 marketing internship. One in Thaialand, and one at a 5 year old local, rapidly expanding internship. I have to make the decision by tomorrow.

Thailand Internship (Bangkok)
- Tourism Marketing Internship with Kenan Institute Asia
- Wouldn't take any money home, but would have all living expenses paid for the summer. Would also have to pay rent back at home, so I would lose about $1500.
- Have to take care of visa, etc. which will be a headache during finals week
- But how cool would it be to live in Bangkok for two months?
- Would lose my current job as office manager at a law firm, which earns $12/hr.
- This is a non-profit that is trying to expand tourism in Thailand post tsunami, it is is also supported by the government. IMO, it could look impressive.

Local Internship + Part time job at law firm
- Would take about $6000-$8000 home, minus rent + food
- Marketing internship with great rapidly expanding local company
- Would be boring, as there are not a lot of people I know staying in my college town
- Would work about 50 hours a week, which could be painful.
- Possibility of part time job with local company after the summer
- The girl who had a similar position to me last summer went to work at Google

What do you think? In terms of fun, memories, money, and - most importantly - my goal of getting a great internship my junior year?

Are you aware of Thailand’s present political situation?

Yes, but that will not influence my decisions (e.i., I am not scared of it)

Advice, anybody?

My vote is for Thailand.

In general, if you have a bona fide working opportunity abroad, I think you should grab it. You get an education in so many different dimensions.

The one yellow flag for me in your post is regarding 50 hours of work a week as painful. For some internship/work opportunities, it is what it is and you embrace it…clock watchers aren’t going to get the most out of the experience and those who give you assignments and evaluate you will notice it.

THAILAND

very

very

very

awesome country
