I got an interview for an internship. However, the location is an hour and a half away from my home. I applied and sent a resume for this, it clearly stated my home address. They scheduled my interview and gave me the address for the location, their posting also stated the same address. I have not gone to the interview yet, but it would feel like a waste of time driving an hour and a half to the interview to be told they won't help me at all. Should I bring up if they offer relocation assistance right now?

Why are you putting this back on the company? Yes, they scheduled the interview, but by sending them your resume, you asked them to do that. I assume when you sent them your resume you knew their address since it said so in the ad.

As for relocation, did you look at the company’s website to see if they offer any assistance. Yes, you can ask, but do it in a general way by asking them if any benefits are available to interns or ask them if they can help you obtain suitable housing during the internship. And if they don’t, the idea is to get experience and you will need to consider other options. Maybe you may need to take the internship and rent a furnished room in a boarding house or private residence close to the job. Remember this is about you getting experience so that you can be more successful in the future.

Now that you mention it, Ken, I have had a 1.5 hour commute. Actually, that was when I started using my car after finding out the train ended up being a 2.25 hour commute.

do not hesitate to ask for assistance/benefits. i will be starting an internship soon, but i won’t be able to use a car–i will use public transport (1 hr commute)–you never know months down the line that the skills you will learn tomorrow may benefit you in a somewhat-related job; this is the time to start learning and start making compromises.

After thinking about it some more, I guess relocation would depend on what the norm is in the local area. I’m used to commutes of 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours for work or school (though it’s through public transportation and not driving), so it didn’t seem extraordinary to me. Been doing that 10 of the past 13 years.

For the interview, I wouldn’t even think twice about making the drive. What’s 3 hours in the entire scheme of things? Especially for a job.

Exactly. The experience of interviewing is something a young person needs. It hones your skills so that when you graduate, you will be used to the process. Having job experience helps too even if it is inconvenient.

What sort of relocation assistance do you think you need? 1 1/2 hours to get to the interview shouldn’t be a big deal. It would make for a long commute (but not exceptional in my area). How long would you have to put up with the long commute? How early in the morning would you start? You should be able to put up with some inconvenience temporarily if the internship offers valuable experience. You could also look into the availability of short-term rentals near the intership. As others have said, even just participating in the interview process can be a worthwhile experience.

Wow! 1.5?
Anyways, my advice is go ahead and do the interview, you probably don’t have much experiences in life yet.

My school is at least 2 hours away from any main city in the midwest. So, to do any off campus interviews, I travel at least 2 hours, and sometimes I use public transport which can take up to 5 hours. I have interview with about 6 companies and even before traveling I did the usual preliminary on campus interviews, or phone interviews.

I have been rejected by most of the companies, and got offers from three companies, one with about 20hrs driving distance with no relocation, another offer with 12/hrs drving distance with relocation, and another right beside my school, but this is a pretty small branch, and I can always come back to reapply for them because they are well-known in my school. I chose the one with 12/hrs driving distance away from my school, and currently commute with public transport there (takes about 20 mins).
