Internship opportunities

Hi everyone,

I am an incoming exchange student from the UK, who will be studying for the next academic year. I am majoring in civil engineering.

I am thinking of internship opportunities following the final exams (from May onwards). Firstly, what local civil engineering firms could I approach/ what university opportunities would you suggest? Secondly, what would I have to do to extend my j-1 visa?

Finally, are the any good prizes/scholarships I can apply for in the civil engineering department or engineering faculty?

Check out the following job fairs as many students find their internships here. I’m sure you’ll have many of your questions answered when you attend.
September 11 & 12, 2012 (optional interviews Sept. 12 & 13)
This career fair is for companies seeking students for full-time positions, internships (summer and semester) and co-ops. Attendance is limited based on available space, and more than 1,200 students attend (student attendance is limited to students and alumni from the Urbana-Champaign campus only). Online registration is available beginning April 16th through http://engineering.illinois.edu/careers</a>. For more information, please e-mail ecs-fair@illinois.edu.

Download Career Fair Information and Policies (.pdf) for all the details. View the career fair parking map.

Please note that the fair is currently full. If you are interested in attending an engineering career fair on campus, please consider registering for Expo (see the link in the next section).

Fall Engineering Employment Expo

September 17-19, 2012
The Fall Engineering Employment Expo is hosted by Engineering Council, a student organization and is for both full-time and internship recruiting. It is similar to the ECS Fall Engineering Career Fair but it is managed by students. For more information go to [Engineering Expo - University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign](http://expo.web.cs.illinois.edu).

Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) Job Fair

September 27, 2012
The CEE Job Fair hosts companies seeking civil and environmental engineers for internships, co-ops, and full-time positions. Registration will open during June. Details about the fair are available at [CEE Job Fair | Civil and Environmental Engineering at Illinois](http://cee.illinois.edu/alumni/jobfair).

Thanks for your info.

These sorts of careers events are also held at my home university in the UK. However, the companies are more keen on graduates than interns. In addition there are often little chance to network.

From the descriptions, the ones at UIUC seem more useful and likely to lead to offers. The only issue is that my j-1 visa doesn’t permit paid employment.

I am keen on finding an internship in the US. I have a long term aim to immigrate if possible :)

Thanks
