Most internships in engineering pay. Pay varies immensely by field and type of organization (gov’t/non-gov’t).

The engineering student interns in Los Angeles earn between 15 and 25 dollars per hour.

I hear Google and Microsoft pay well ($30+/hr).
Research positions will involve a stipend (end up being only less than $20/hr).

As UCLA Band Mom said, in LA the average intern will earn slightly under $25/hr. Some places will pay you according to your year in school.

for me, being an IE sophomore it’s 60000 prorated over 10 weeks, 2k signing bonus.

Some dont, even some big companies dont.

$31/hour working in Big Oil, $3k signing bonus. But the real money is in the overtime.

The numbers that you’re hearing in this thread are relatively higher end (though normal for their field of engineering, these fields get more money for internships than others tend to.) More or less every paid internship I’ve seen or been offered has been more than $15 an hour. Then again, it could have something to do with the fact that it costs a lot more to live somewhere like LA than anywhere I’ve tried to get an internship (WV, VA, AL, OH).

by the way my earnings will be in houston. Low living cost, no state tax

Houston has a low cost of living? How much would a one bedroom apartment be down there? I’ve heard good things about the area.

Duh, self-selection bias. All these “surveys” should be interpreted with caution.

@ chuy

In the NICEST areas of Houston, a 1 bedroom apartment won’t go for more than $900, I can guarantee you that.

I’d guess they’d go for around $700-900 in the nicer areas. Hell, when I first moved here, I lived in a VERY nice place, and my 2 bedroom apartment was only $1020 a month.

I wouldn’t really consider that to be a low cost of living, but not a really high one either. Pretty good 2 bedroom apartments in the places I’ve looked (cheap areas of WV, VA, OH) go for $500-600 a month, which is what I would define as a low cost of living.

the apartment I found, one bedroom $900. top of the line gym and a really nice swimming pool. 24 hour concierge service. Chauffeur service for anywhere within 10 mile radius. Completely furnished. Granite top, styling new furnitures. Weekly maid service, and that’s right inside greenway plaza, one block away from the financial district where I will be working.

my friend has an internship with boeing this summer up in seattle, if i remember correctly they will be paying him about 5000 a month, plus they are paying for his apartment. he’s in computer science

5000 a month, is that 3 months? O.o
very nice!

5000 a month isnt that much…it’s a decent amount but it’s not unheard of

5000/month is excellent for an intern/co-op. It seems to be the norm for finance people who are paid salaried. For hourly, works out to about $29/hour.

Anyways, don’t stress pay TOO much for an internship. Make sure things are competitive of course…The money is nice, but it should be about getting experience for the future. If you have a strong interest in an area, take advantage of the opportunities. If you want to make as much money as possible, work in Big Oil, preferably at ExxonMobil.

Aren’t they laying people off right now? How well can they be doing with oil below $60?

high finance (especially overseas) pay just as much as and probably more than oil except with more perks… free dinner…black car…

my friend got placed in hong kong for a BB IBD and he got offered:
Free round trip business class
Free Housing
Free car rental
3k sign on
60k prorated
1/2 overtime (when you factor in the long hours you are probably making a double)

not to mention free dinner, black car, wine and dine every friday
