Internship Question

I'm currently a sophomore and I'm definitely looking at getting an internship for the summer. However, I was talking to my parents today and they told me to only look at places around home or my college because they weren't sure how I was going to get around (they really don't want me to drive very far), how I was going to find housing etc.... which are all valid points I guess but I would like to go explore another part of the country.

For people taking up internships far from home or their college, how did you deal with all those issues that my parents brought up?

IF they don’t want you to drive far from home or your college (and how far is “far”?), would they be comfortable with you spending the summer in a totally different part of the country?

Logistically speaking, there are a lot of variables. Do you have a car? If not, aim for cities with great transportation systems. Do you have enough money saved to cover your housing/food/utilities? Would your parents be willing to pay for that for you? Do you possibly have friends you could stay with, or friends interested in interning in the same area?

In some larger cities, such as NYC and DC, colleges will rent out their dorms to interning students. A lot of students do that for the summer while interning.

I have interned in Seattle and gotten by with only the public bus system, and it worked out fine. Just make sure there are transportation options in the city you are looking at. I agree with you that experiencing a different part of the country is a smart and fun idea.
