From what i have heard, Wash U seems to be a wonderful school. But I intend to pursue chem eng, and I have heard from somep people that the internship and research opportunities for chem eng is quite limited. Can someone please clarify this?

My son graduated in Chem Eng in 2008. While at Wash U he had no problem finding on campus research with a professor. As far as internships, he found those on his own. He had a co-op as a packaging engineer at Cadbury Schweppes in St. Louis. He took off one semester to do that one. He also had a summer internship with Covidien, a pharmaceutical company, in St. Louis. There are many corporations with operations in St. Louis. Good luck!

I’m a current chemical engineering major and I can vouch that research opportunities are bountiful! I’d definitely recommend applying for the McKelvey Research Scholarship if you’re interested in research, cause that’ll open even more doors for you. As for internships, that has little to do with the university and more to do with what you are able to be accepted to. I didn’t have an internship this summer (I opted to travel, work, and take organic chemistry instead) but here’s something AWESOME I got to do through the chemE department at WashU:

The ChemE (Often called EECE for environment, energy, and chemical engineering) department runs a program called International Experience in Engineering Program (IEEP) and each summer runs a 2.5 week trip to a different international location. When the participants return to campus in the fall, they take a 3-credit class together (that counts toward your ChemE elective requirements!) and do a research project on something that piqued their interest during the trip. This year our group traveled to India, where we spent the majority of our time in lectures and lab tours at the Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay. During weekends we toured the area, and also spent a day each in Bangalore, Delhi, and Aggra (TAJ MAHAL!). Past trips have traveled to Beijing (to study air quality during the olympics) and South Korea, and I believe the next two summers will be to Hong Kong and then Brazil.
