Internship/Research opportunities for entering college freshman in engineering?

Hello, I will be at Berkeley in the fall and would like to do some research in the summer to compensate some of the costs of the summer classes I will be taking there.

I searched for hours on the web and could only find REU, which is a program for sophomores (??)

Please help, any advice is much appreciated.

REU’s don’t take anyone pre-college, and their deadlines are already over (try for them next year— many have deadlines in January).

You have a small possibility to do research this summer if you have some sot of technical skill (i.e, programming), and can work independently— look up Berkeley profs who are doing research that interests you, and email or visit them. The chance is small but sometimes they have enough money for their research that they can take on an undergrad, but approach it from their prospective— they are very busy and don’t want to babysit an undergrad that doesn’t know what to do— and money is tight.
