Internship v My Own Projects

I'm a currently a high school junior. Next fall, I plan on applying to a few competitive schools with strong computer science undergrad programs. Since middle school, I've been extremely interested in technology, which has spurred my interest in programming for both the web and mobile devices. In my free time I often work on my own projects, which I enjoy very much- it's definitely my passion.

So for this summer, I was planning on applying for an internship at a tech company in NYC. However, my programming skills dont rival those of college interns, and I can't seem to find how my skills could be put to good use. I am very interested in the startup culture - would it be worth it apply for an internship simply helping out around the office, even if it is "bit*hwork"?

On the other hand, i usually spend my summers in PA having fun, but I devote a lot of time to working on my own projects.

Would colleges rather see my getting an internship at a tech company as more impressive than being individualistic and research and working on my own ideas?

If you know any company looking for someone that has great ideas, has a passion for technology, and has good web design skills and modest programming skills, feel free to share!

Its going to be really difficult to get a paid internship at your level. You can try if you’d like. I’d recommend having some fun with smaller projects. This shows that you’re enthusiastic and you can put it on your online profile when your in college looking for some real experiences.

Try programming some iphone/android apps on your free time. Its always fun to come up with creative ideas to help people with whatever and make it a reality. Who knows, maybe it’ll become big and you’ll make a lot of money.
