I am doing an internship for an influential congressman next year and was wondering if this would give me a leg up in admissions to Georgetown for IR

Yes, it will probably help. However, nothing is going to replace solid grades/SAT scores. One caveat-Be careful about gettting a recommendation from said congressmen (if u even can). I'm thinking you don't even really know him/her. I bet a recommendation from whoever is like your boss at their office would look good though.

if i worked on a congressman's campaign and got a rec from him, your saying this wouldn't help?

who is the congressman nw31

The recommendations are designed to give a close perspective of you. Prestigious people don't usually know you as well as say a teacher who taught you English for instance. Even if they know you, their prestige is not going to increase your chances.

Exactly. What are they going to say? Timmy was a very good worker? They don't know anything about you. It will be very impersonal, and won't help. If you personally know a Congress person then go ahead and use it, but a rec from whoever got to know you the best at the Congress person's office would look better.

nw31 - i'll be interning on the hill too
who are you interning for?
and where are you staying

About half the people who apply to georgetown have worked for a politician or on a political campaign. It's nice, but definitely doesn't give you a "leg up".
