internships after freshman year

im obviously going to be an entering freshman at NU. the other thread on this board about the JP Honors program made me realize how little I know about internships after freshman year. What else is out there after freshman year? Are there other programs that seem to be as prestigious as this JP Honors Program. I'm not even sure I'd want to do an internship after freshman year b/c maybe pursue other interests (study abroad, social work). I just want to know what's out there to shoot for. I know NU isnt a major target but it is good enough for me to be a good candidate if I hopefully maintain a 3.5 and above, right?

You don't have to have a crazy internship your freshman year. Just try to do something meaningful (and yes, study abroad counts, as does volunteering). In fact, some would advise you to just take that summer easy and do things fun (when you still have the chance to do those things). The only people I know who did anything for a decent brand name as a freshman are those who had connections. Sophomore year you would ideally aim for something relevant (something in business/finance but not necessarily IB, for example). But even then, it's about getting as much experience as you can. Not everyone gets those prestigious internships early on in college. So apply for various internship programs in a variety of fields, and see what options you get back.

A good resource for off-campus searching (esp. for underclassmen) is the Vault Guide to Top Internships, which is way better than the Princeton Review book. You WILL find something you like.

thanks for the feedback. anyone else? any examples of what current or past college students did after freshman year?
