Internships and off-Campus Job Options

liberate…ouch…nice dig to theatre majors…(although D is a music major)…D was not looking for a theatre related job…D spent a lot of time researching internships though the Wasserman Career Center and most internships in major corporations were unpaid/ for credit. Your experience in computer science related areas may be different, but for marketing/advertising/ publishing related jobs at companies like CBS, HBO, Bulgari, Sony, Warner, etc. this was the case.

Let’s put it this way: internship that require high-level skills tend to be paid positions. This does not include paper-pushing jobs. I was not trying to put down theater majors.

lol…now you’ve gone and insulted the field of marketing communications! It’s ok, D looks forward to a summer working with a bunch of low-skilled, paper pushers! : )

uskoolfish, I’m an incoming freshman to Steinhardt and come next summer I’ll be looking for the same types of internships as your D; it’s comforting to know that some were available to her even if they weren’t paid. What she’s doing sounds very interesting to me even if it is low-skilled paper pushing :).

However forward liberate might have been, I think there’s a lesson to what he’s saying. Not everyone has the funds to take on an internship for credit. There are few paid internships available for my field (psychology), and I have done unpaid work before, but my parents are neither of the mindset nor in a position to pay for credits so I can do an internship. So, for those people who are hoping to potentially go into the fields of uskoolfish’s daughter, be mindful that the opportunities are mostly unpaid or for credit.
