I'm an international student from India and I'm hoping to double major in Physics and engineering(with concentration on computer/Electrical eng) at Trinity College,Connecticut this fall. I want to do an internship at MIT. Which is the best time and how do I apply for internships at MIT?

Generally speaking, the best way to get a research position is to directly email professors whose work you find interesting. There are not many organized research programs at MIT for non-MIT students.

For research positions over the summer, the best time to email a professor is usually February or March.

Getting internships at top private schools is unlikely. It would be best to apply to your state university. But, there’s nothing holding you back and a very, very nice professor might agree!

If you are starting this fall then that means you are going to be a freshmen. Most internships/summer research programs only accept sophomores and juniors, and very few accept internationals.

Check out the MIT Summer Research Program, http://odge.mit.edu/undergraduate/msrp/, they have summer research opportunities for pretty much all STEM fields and they accept international students (very few, <10% of the accepted students).

Last summer I was part of the MSRP-Biology program, so if you’d like to know more about the program and MIT during the summer feel free to ask. Also, like you, I am an international student.

Best of luck.
