I'm a freshmen at Rensselaer, and I am doing their accelerated management/law program. Currently my transcript says I have a 4.0 and a class rank of 1. What business related or law internships can I apply for? I did a lot of searching and all I found was JP Morgan Honors Program. :( Please help!

doesn't your school provide that kind of info? online careernet perhaps?

Almost all internships are for older students. So, I turned here for some help.

anyone???...

Have you checked local law firms? Look around their website. Take initiative. E-mail the HR people if they have an e-mail link.

Do you have any connections? Do your parents know anyone? It might be easier to go through that method.

One thing or another, you're not going to make the JP Morgan Honors program, because there are tons of business students who are juniors (and sophomores) who have a 4.0 GPA in their major, from a better school, too. The reason I say you won't make it is because you are too young in your college career. Do not take it personally. While I am an engineering major, I know friends who were business/math majors who look after these types of programs. There are thousands that apply, few that are selected. These few are mostly sophomores and juniors.

And don't tell me you only found the JPMorgan's Honors program. There are TONS of business internships. Click the link here and look at all the banking companies: The Global 2000 - Forbes.com - sort it by industry. Look at those company names and google them. Once you get to their website, go to the careers section and apply for an internship, if they have one. Most companies should have at least a few listings by now.

What you might want to try is companies NOT in the banking/finance industry. Whoa?? Did he just say that? Yes!!! It'll be far easier and less competitive (at least at your level) if you found a business type internship with a technology company (Intel? Lockheed Martin? Northrop Grumman? Apple? Philips? BAE Systems? IBM? Motorola? Stryker Medical? Rockwell Collins? Boeing?). They might not have a whole lot of postings as compared to companies like JPM, but you won't be going up against the caliber of students who apply at places like JPM (especially for their honors program).

Also, what extra-circulars do you have? You definitely need some sort of leadership traits to be considered.

What about taking a course this summer, if all thing fails? You can get ahead in your program if they offer the courses you need to take. This shows great initiative on your part, especially to the recruiter if you bring it up. While your other friends were out on the beach partying all day, you could take a class that will eat up 3-4 hours a day, study for a bit, and still have fun. As a last resort, I think this is a great thing to do.

Thanks for the advice. Just to clear one thing up though. RPI is a tough school. It's no piece of cake. It's just as hard to get a 4.0 here as any other top college.... We don't have any A+'s giving aid to grade inflation. I appreciate all the advice so far, but just know I'm not going to any mediocre college. I read the program through, and it is for "rising" sophomores and juniors. This means plenty of other freshmen are applying. I know there are many qualified applicants, but I think I at least have a shot at it. I think it's something worth applying for. I don't know how many 4.0's there are in many colleges, but I know there aren't many at my college.

It may be hard, but it's primarily known for engineering and science, not business. I never said your school was less than mediocre, I simply said that there are better schools than RPI for business. There's a difference. As you can see in the two lists I provided for you, the "proof" is there (of course, the method in which they rank these schools can be questioned, but nonetheless if RPI was there, it would be consistent in both lists.)

I can understand your frustration. Some random guy on CC is telling you that your school is not as good as others, even if you are paying $32k+ and upwards for your tuition. It happens. It doesn't mean you can't land a job. You can still get the job... most of it will depend on YOUR ability to interview. Your school has nothing to do really on how you can communicate in a tense situation when applying for these jobs. It's something you learn. You may have a career center at your school, but that's only going to go so far.

The 4.0 and the Rank #1 is just for them to call you for a phone interview. It's not going to get you the job. You have a good base starting out, but the rest is not up to two numbers (your GPA or either your rank).

What EC's do you have? Your 4.0 GPA and your rank#1 won't help you get a spot. Do you have any leadership experience? Do you hold a position in a club? Are you a writer/editor for your school newspaper/magazine? Do you have volunteer work? Do you play sports? Have you won any, or many, scholarships? Have you competed in national/state/regional tournaments? Do you have high SAT scores (these do matter for some companies)? Do you have recommendations from professors? Can you interview well? If they ask you to respond to a scenario posed in last week's WSJ, can you do that? (check the other threads, someone was asked this in a PHONE interview)

Hey yeah I know. Rankings aren't everything though. That list seems to be a little bit out of sync for a lot of schools. As far the long list goes: Yes I got a variety of great things on the resume. Mind giving me a link to that WSJ article? this might help me prepare for possible future interviews if I am unsuccessful this time around. Also, being a freshmen makes it much more difficult but I feel it is worth it to try at least. I feel I got a shot. I'm not saying I will get anything, but it is worth a try. I know you are trying to help, and I appreciate it very much. Thanks again.

Sure, no problem. I'm not trying to be mean, just giving you the facts and what I've heard.

Regarding the WSJ article, I'm not sure because the poster didn't mention it. I saw it a few days ago, maybe in the SEO 2008 thread?
