I recently sent in a resume to Merrill Lynch, asking about internship possibilities. I have already gotten a reply, requesting that I ask for information from the college I will be attending, UCB, regarding college credit for the internship. After that, I can begin working at the company. I also sent out a resume to Morgan Stanley and I'm thinking they might respond in the same fashion.

I have no idea how to even go about requesting college credit as of right now, since I'm still in high school (both Merrill and Morgan are informed about that). I called the administration office, but they were no help. I have even asked people on the berkeley campus and even they don't know. Does anyone have any idea how I should go about receiving credit for internships at Berkeley when I won't be attending the college until next year?

Wow. Merrill Lynch? Good job dude. I'd suggest giving Berkeley a call and asking them what you asked here..

He did say he already tried calling them.

You say you tried the administration office? Or do you mean, admissions office? Because that's where I would start.

Hey guys, thanks for responding. I thuoght no one would! I called the administration, who directed my call to the admissions office, who directed my call somewhere else, which ended up being a machine that hung up on me -_- Does anyone have any personal experience? Would it be possible to just go ahead with the internship and worry about credit later? ML seems pretty adamant on getting the credit information. Maybe because they want to be sure I attend Berkeley without straight up asking me "are you really going to attend berkeley?" What should I do?

Internships at top companies like that are highly selective and dependent on your college gpa as a limiting factor as well as other soft factors. These companies only recruit at top campuses across the nation. Considering how cut-throat berkeley is you'd best put in lots of hours once you get here if you want to work for someplace like Merryl Lynch. Most such opportunties are over the summer.

Thanks for the information. But like I mentioned in the posts above, getting the job isn't as much of a problem as is trying to find out how to get the credit. No one has any idea how the credit system at berkeley works?

To my knowledge sometimes you can get credit for things like internships with which the school is already familiar with.

For example there is a health-type internship that you can do for credit where you get to work at a hospital I believe. You can also get credit for "field work" related to your major or a "independent research" too. Working at Merryl Lynch is a job and would be unrelated to most majors so I doubt they will give you credit. Haas Students have classes where they compete with each other while working for top companies so that's something close you can do.

I would ask the haas department about internships with financial companies, since the job you want to do seems closest to accounting or i-banking or whatever. The career center is also good to call, try finding the counselor the counsels business students. Career.berkeley.edu. For haas I don't know the number but you'd probably find it at haas.berkeley.edu.

Polite Antagonis, thanks for the ideas, I'll call in the morning.
