-How common/likely is it for freshmen to get (any) internships?

-Also does an internship necessarily have to be exactly related to one's career goals? For example, if one gets a marketing internship but for some reason later decides to go into accounting, would that marketing internship be considered a waste?

-If an internship is off campus, do most students take a bus or drive?

-Also, does the "prestige" of a company have more impact for future career prospects? For instance, Morgan Stanley Vs some random..

depends. what kind of internship do you want? if you want a good one, it is rare. if you want an unpaid one or paid with not much actual good experience, then it is common. connections are helpful, but if you had them, i doubt you would be posting here. if you do though, use them for all they're worth.

just go buy or lease a car. it beats riding the bus. la public transit sucks. i learned this first hand working 20 hours each week. not cool. work was not too fun or well paying either or applicable. my recommendation is just go find some boring internship at some entertainment company (universal, paramount, miramax, etc) because there are lots of them if you really want an internship. otherwise just stay on campus and have fun.

yes, of course prestige matters. it always does.

What about interning at a financial services company? Such as Fidelity investments or something similar to that nature? Does that provide any support for my resume and how hard is it to obtain?

depends what you do there. it would look ok on your resume. if you can get one like that though, all the power to you. problem is getting it. if your resume is as naked as a thai hooker on the streets of bangkok, then you should probably go for something easier to get.

"How hard is it to obtain" "Prestige" "Marketing" "Accounting"

It's great that you're thinking about this yahoo. I suggest that you schedule to meet up with a counselor at the Career Center if you're worried this early. Wear a suit tomorrow, dress well, comb your hair, and just check out the internship fair. Since you've barely established a GPA, have taken at most Economics 1 and 2 and some Calculus, it would be very difficult for you to land an internship while competing against fellow Bruins who are third or fourth-year Business-Economics and Accounting majors/minors. Get a taste though and best of luck. :)

Meet enthusiastic recruiters ready, willing, and able to interview on-the-spot. This is your opportunity to line up your career before you graduate. Do research these companies before you arrive. If you're prepared, you'll be pleasantly surprised with the results. Questions?

P.S. - Dress to impress!

I was just wondering about this today. This sucks 'cause it's so early in the month! Does anyone know if it's worth going? I went to Fall career fair and I thought it was a waste of time. Although I did get a bunch of free pens and a couple of stuffed animals/dolls.

I was hoping for a nice notification e-mail for this event.

If you thought that the Fall career fair was a waste of time, then the two coming up will be worse. There will be fewer representatives and not too many well-known companies.

mmm yeah i've been wondering if it's even possible for a freshman EE like me to get an internship ><. i would love one... =]
i think i'm just gonna take summer school and get ahead on classes... then i may have a better chance next year... maybe... lol

I'm good friends with one of Prof. Thomas Hahn's daughters. He's like the chair for one of the departments in Engineering. I asked her to put in a good for a friend last Spring and he did a paid internship with Hahn all throughout last summer. Not sure if he's still with Hahn's group though. So yeah, it's nice knowing people with connections.

It is possible to get an internship as a freshmen. Well maybe not at a company, but you can definitely try to look for one that's funded by NSF or a government department. The typical deadlines are between Jan. 31 - Feb. 15.

It's definitely possible to get a summer internship as a freshman.

You should attend EWI (Evening With Industry) if you're an engineering major; I went last year (as a freshman), and although I didn't obtain my internship because of EWI, it definitely helped me network to a couple of company representatives.

@yahooo: What did you end up thinking? For the Career Center, please make sure you're they're early and please check out the workshops they offer: UCLA Career Center

You have to schedule a few weeks in advance and they are offered only so frequently.
