Internships for Freshmen

How realistic is it for freshmen to get internships (paid or unpaid) without major or relative work experience in a given sector? I would really like to gain some experience during my first summer vacation interning for a banking firm (it doesn't have to be a BB, since I know that is damn near impossible) or in industries with relative relations with the banking/financing sector. Is this possible when I really don't have much work experience or should I just forget about it?

A good spot to try is your local power / gas companies. You aren’t likely to be offered top internships as a freshman unless you are a minority or an unbelievable talent. The utility companies are actively looking to bring on students for the summer. You probably won’t have to be a top student, and they will probably bring you on full-time at a wage double what you could make at the mall. The utilities are constantly trading electricity and gas on the markets, so they are pretty good companies to check out.

Thank you for that advice!

anyone else want to add anything?

Depending on your location, craigslist may have some good opportunities. Here in Los Angeles, there are loads of great internships being advertised (but not necessarily in your field).
