Internships for high school freshman?

Are there any internships, I'm talking about the big company internships....
available for high schoo freshmen?
I already talked to the counselor and he said "NO"...
But many people say that i have to start as soon as possible... so...

SO, Are there any internships available for high school freshmen?

How about Sophomores
Juniors
Seniors?

PLZ tell me!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you're talking about like the "big 4"....they don't have high school internships.

Enjoy life,

Internships are no fun,

besides, you just got into HS, you really should be thinking about something other than internships/future jobs.

Enjoy life is always good advice. However, I can't fault you for wanting to start early. I would encourage you to find something interesting to you to do. While an internship may be a good line for your eventual college app, whats more important is that its something you can talk intelligently and hopefully passionately about.

Learning how to work in a professional environment is something that you can never learn too early. Who knows maybe an essay or a reference can come from this.

In terms of advice, I've read about companies that connect students to positions though most I think are for college. Keep crawling around these boards and I'm sure something will come up. Best of luck!

I'll put it simply. College students already have a hard time finding a "big" internship. That makes it impossible for high school students unless you have amazing connections. Even then, it's impossible because no high school student has enough skills to do anything beyond getting coffee and making photocopies.

red06,

I respectfully disagree. I think today's high school students, who are folks that have had internet their entire lives, are vastly different than when we (I'm just assuming you were born before say 1985 or so) were students. I've met a number of high school students in the last several years and I must say, they are enthusiastic, resourceful and definitelyhad more skills than just getting coffee and making photocopies.

That said, I don't disagree that internships (particularly at name firms) will be near impossible. But just because its hard doesn't you mean you shouldn't try!

I applaud your ambition... but good god. This isn't happening, and if the skies part and you manage to accomplish this through some divine intervention (or sick connections), all you will be doing is ***** work (coffee runs). But hey, nothing is impossible, so prove us wrong.

I have never heard of a high school freshman getting an internship (by this I mean a real internship not copying/filing/copy runs). I don't even know how they would begin to start looking. Obviously if you're a genius at 14, you wouldn't be a high school freshman so you could probably have a better chance. But even if you're 14 and are in all honors classes, what makes you able to compete with college freshman. Oh, and the fact that I don't think you can legally sign anything b/c you're not 18 and other things that age matter....wait till college man...for now just do what you can do pad your college resume.

They'd be top of the class if they could make a photocopy.

Shouldn't you be out playing ball??

Freshman year is definitely not the time to get enveloped in internships, no matter how "grown up" you feel compared to your classmates. Enjoy your time now; you're not getting it back till you're 64.

There are some out there but nearly all are unpaid. I interned at a Big 6 firm as a sophomore/junior in high school (though that was many, many years ago). It was mostly shadowing and running basic errands, but it gave me exposure to the business world, I saw how things worked, and I decided to follow a different career path. I did have a partner write a letter of recommendation for colleges.

If you expect to find a firm that will pay you or give you major responsibilities, it will be tough. Though I once did hire a student in the summer between high school and college. I was her interviewer for the college to which she was matriculating, and I liked her.

i've never even thought about this. i just worked at the supermarket last summer, which didn't pay very well. i would love to get some REAL experience some time, but like most people (seems like adults here) are saying, i don't know anyone would be hiring. this would prolly look good on the resume too.

There are several internships out there for high school students from age 15 and up (NIH/SEAP). High school is the perfect time to be thinking about internships, the earlier you start, the more you’ll have to write in your resume, the easier it is to get more internships later on.

anemonix/ what’s NIH/SEAP? I can’t seem to find any information about them anywhere…

Because bumping a 2.5 year old thread is a good idea, right?
