Internships for High School Students?

Hi, I'm a high school junior very interested in investment banking, and I'm looking for a finance-related internship for this summer! I realize that getting an internship at a large bank as a high school student is almost impossible without connections (and sadly I have none), so obviously I'm not looking into the bulge-bracket banks or anything. But there are a few very regional, very small banks near where I live and I was wondering if it's worth a shot inquiring? I'm willing to work very hard and I'll do anything for experience in the field, even if I don't get to do actual work (which I understand not being able to have, since I'm only in high school). All I want is just to be around professionals and get a feel for the industry.

Is it a long shot? Or should I try it out?

Very long shot. No reason not to try, but even regional boutique firms don’t really have a need for interns and they tend to get in the way. If you wanted to dabble in finance, I’d suggest a local PWM firm, or see if your parents know any financial planners you could communicate with. Normally people are happy to have you shadow, answer any questions, teach you, etc.

That being said, if you have interest in investment banking, ideally every summer will be full of work, so you might just want to take it easy, relax, enjoy your summer. Maybe start reading the wall street journal or buy a few investment banking books, that would be very beneficial too. And just because it’s a long shot doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it. Give it a shot. Call them up, ask good questions, maybe they’ll take an interest in you, it’s impossible to say.

Long shot. Just take the time to relax and enjoy your freedom. If you really do want to do something, look into a PWM firm like BigBeluga suggested. Not much experience needed and you can get a BB name on your resume
