What iBanking internships are available for rising sophomores (Summer 2011)? I want to do something in NYC.

Your best bet, unless tou are attending a target and have some strong connections, will be to pursue boutiques - cold call, reach out to your network, inquiry email, etc. If you are willing to work for free, you will increase your chances as well. That said, you don’t need an IB internship as a soph to set yourself up for a SA position as a junior - any relevant internship experience (here is an article on solid opportunities outside of the BB SA offerahead of your junior year will definitely help you on your path to the SA position junior summer.

Let me know if you have any other questions and good luck.

IBanker

Would it be worth my while to apply to BBs? Also, would this affect my chances in the future as a rising junior?

It won’t hurt you to apply to BBs, although you will obviously be a long shot, and it will have no influence at all on your applications for SA positions during your junior year.

ur time would be better spent networking with boutiques, do that and reach out to enough of them and you will find something

There are spring break weeks at investment banks, where you can meet the staff. This will increase you chances significantly of getting a junior summer analyst offer. This does tend to attract more underrepresented minorities than white/asian males.

Investment banks are smart and no ones wants to be a stepping stone to Goldman Sachs. If you can, many banks offer long-term internships in London, Frankfurt, and Paris. If you can spare a semester, this would be a fantastic opportunity, though you may have to postpone graduation by a year. In this job market, I see no reason not to.

UBS and JP Morgan have sophomore programs I believe.

It is difficult - but not impossible to get a sophomore placement at a BB. I personally know someone who got a top BB IBD sophomore internship.

That being said, boutiques will probably give you more results. Don’t leave any stone unturned though.

unless you quality for URM programs, BBs are pretty much a waste of time.

Try to get a boutique internship, but in all honesty, any finance job will do. It’s your sophomore summer, recruiters aren’t expecting much

I looked into some of the BB programs for sophomores, but most of them are for URMs. Are there any out there for white/asian males?

Could someone please elaborate on these programs aimed toward urm’s.

The bringer of good news: I just talked to my friend who got back from a SA position at a top BB in NYC and he said that there were 8 others in his SA class who were sophomores. And to give us even more hope, my friend A. goes to a semi-target(like me, UCLA/MICH/UVA level) and B. never had a finance position in his life and C. didn’t network, just resume dropped at like 20 banks. oh and D. hes a half asian/half white male and E. Trust me he had no family connections, we grew up together in a podunk Midwestern town.

I recently was able to land a paid wealth management position this fall, which will fiance-atize my resume a little bit. What I am wondering is which other BB’s can you apply to for next summer when you will only have finished sophomore year, as almost all of the recruiting from my school is junior level?
