I am a junior in music who is planning on going to graduate school for ethnomusicology (study of cultures and music, closely related to anthropology). My institution is small, not incredibly well-known in this field, and does not have any such program. I am here only to take advantage of in-state tuition.

Ethnomusicology is generally something people pursue in grad school, as schools which actually offer undergrad degrees in it are few and far between. As such, grad schools tend to accept people from a wide variety of related backgrounds...but of course, real-world experience is always helpful! However, as you can probably surmise, I have 0 experience in 'world music'...only a performance background with other relevant musical knowledge.

I need to go about getting said experience, especially since I am from a very remote rural area and am quite isolated from just about everything. It was brought to my attention that I can begin asking professors about internship/volunteer opportunities for this summer. How does one generally go about this? A polite, brief email detailing my educational background and willingness to do anything to get experience? Would emailing professors at prestigious universities (which mine definitely is not) be a useless endeavour? I can certainly provide references, if needed. Should I include my resume in the emails?
