Does anyone know of any internships around the Metro Detroit area in Michigan? I am currently a high school junior involved in many extra-curriculars.

It’s very difficult to get hired at this age. In high school, I was interested in going into medicine/biomed and now I’m majoring in comp sci, so I can give two spins/roads of advice.

For medicine, I remember Henry Ford Hospitals running a premed summer fellowship for high schoolers. It was very competitive though, but you could basically shadow a doctor there for a couple of weeks, if I remember correctly. (It’s very vague now, because junior year of high school has already been 4 years … wow that’s shocking) You can also try asking your HS career center to see if they have or heard of any programs. If you want to go beyond Metro Detroit (at my age, I definitely want this, because Michigan is pretty much dead now), you can also look into some precollege programs or some research programs. I remember MIT runs some sort of research program for high schoolers, but they picked like 70 students in the country, so that was crazy competitive.

Here are some HS research programs to get you started:

MIT’s RSI: [Research Science Institute | Center for Excellence in Education](Research Science Institute | Center for Excellence in Education)

MSU’s HSHSP: [url=High School Honors Science, Math and Engineering Program - High School Honors Science, Math and Engineering Program]High School Honors Science Program - HSHSP - Michigan State University/url

If you’re interested in doing research, you should get started on the applications right away, because if I remember correctly, the deadlines are rapidly approaching.

For tech, you pretty much should be in college; however, I remember that at the tech firm I worked at in CA last summer a high schooler was there shadowing because his dad worked there. My dad works in small biz (auto-related) and they sometimes have high school interns shadowing. Ask around … your parents, or friends of parents and see if they have any opportunities for you.

Another good option is to get started on a project that really interests you. I remember I started playing with robotics during my senior year of high school and after I graduated from HS. This led to a research opportunity in a robotics lab in my first year in college, which led to a summer research fellowship, which was completely memorable, even though I’m no longer aiming for robotics. (computer security is what all the cool kids do now :D)

Point is that your interests are bound to evolve over time, but now is a great time to learn and explore. It doesn’t matter if you get into a certain program (it’s great if you do), but it’s important to find something that you’re most passionate about. Be proactive. Passion is very hard to find these days though, which makes it all the more fun to search for. Good luck! :)

Sorry I hadn’t seen your post sooner.

Here is some information about Ford Motor Company and their High School Science and Technology Program (HSSTP). While this won’t be of help to you this year, it could be helpful for next year.
