Does anyone have any experience with internships in Washington, DC? Especially interested in Smithsonian museums. How hard is it get one? WHat are they looking for in candidates? Thanks!

I have done an internship in Washington D.C. (Capitol Hill). The most important thing is to apply EARLY. Many DC internships have early deadlines each semester. If you want a summer internship, the application deadlines for various positions are usually due by February or March. Fall semester deadlines are usually by June or July. In your response essays, make sure you are articulate and apply to places directly related to your field. Follow all directions on the application. If they want a transcript, recommendations or writing sample, include it!

My daughter will be doing an internship at the Smithsonian, November through April. She is graduating college this June. Does anyone have suggestions for housing in the DC area?

JudyL: There are universities in DC such as George Washington, Georgetown, Howard, American, etc, and I think they can provide housing.

Do you know if they will provide housing during the school year? She will be there November through April?

Hi, I had an internship at the Smithsonian's Natural History Musuem last summer (cntn. this summer too...) in the RTP program. I got admitted as a freshman who had only taken one class in my major. I worked at a national laboratory for a couple of years and think that must have helped...I'm really not sure what they look for except for drive. Most of it comes down to the advisors. If you match with one, you're far more likely than someone with equal or better stats who has no common interests with any of the advisors. I only know that because of the other kids in the program though, as I had no prior connections with the instituion. It's kind of a toss up because I was tied as one of the youngest admitted last year. Most of my fellow interns had great background in their field and very specific interests and as for me? Well I just gave it a shot and am SO grateful I did (and that they gave me one too)! Anyways...good luck. Write me for questions...

I was tallking to a young man who works for our Congressman and he said to try WISH - Washington Interns S..Housing...

hope this helps...
