I’ll PM you
@Dolemite His first internship after freshman year was grant funded (he was paid) and he did chemistry research at his college campus. He had joined a professor’s research group early freshman year and worked with this group during the summer. This professor became a great mentor to his research group. Housing was available in the dorms if he wanted it, but he already had off campus housing secured (renting a house with other students and the lease started in July). He rented a room in a friend’s apartment for one week until he moved into his house. He was on the quarter system and started the last week of June through the end of August or first week of September. It was less formal than the REU internships but imo more personal and he did a lot of work. Great experience!
The following two summers he had REU internships at two out of state college campuses doing research.
@MDRI sure…he should ask his professors at college.
But really…it’s June 19. Most internships for this summer are probably filled.
What about a regular JOB?
Both my daughters got formal but unpaid internships with nonprofits after freshman year. The older one, who is a rising senior in college now, gained a ton of valuable experience from hers, and it was something she’d always wanted to do as well–we had volunteered with the organization as a family for years. She has had paid internships in her field the following summers. The other one applied months ago and starts soon at a different nonprofit. A friend of hers who also just finished freshman year has an REU. Most of the other students we know had a regular summer job or took summer classes the summer after freshman year.
Most freshman at least at my school do not get internships as freshman. If they did it’s because of parents and other connections that get them. The only reason I actually got some communication from the major defense company I applied to was a courtesy to my dad who’s runs a major program there.
