Internships, Summer Programs, Volunteering

Hey,
I want to know if most good colleges [Ivys] look for students who have some sort of internship or have attended some type of Summer Program at a college. I would intern, but I don't know much about interning or where to intern. Also, Summer Programs at colleges are TOO expensive [such as at Brown or Harvard]. I like Art, Chemistry, and basically helping others. Any "voluteering" suggestions? Volunteering at a hospital is common among applicants.
Thank You

Anything productive that you do over the summer – including working an ordinary job like being a supermarket bagger to earn spending money or money for college – could impress colleges.

If you live by a college or a research institution, you could try looking for a volunteer or paid research position there, or you can check out your local art museum and try volunteering there.

Doing meaningful research (if that’s your thing) can help greatly with your college app if you manage to complete a research project and have it published or win a research prize (Intel, Siemens ect)
