When we looked at USC they made a big deal about the large number of summer internships for even the freshman. The CS dept said they had more companies looking for CS students to do summer internships then USC had to apply for them. Unfortunately we fell for the bait. After an extremely rigorous year we found no freshman getting summer internships except the kids with connections through their families or previous jobs. Any Freshman you know get one?

You cannot expect an internship to fall into a student's lap. I'm going to be a senior in the fall and have had an internship every summer since I've been at USC and none of them have been through a previous job or family connections.

If you are determined to get an internship, USC makes it very easy to attain one. Viterbi has 2 job fairs every year (one each semester) with tons of companies in attendance. Furthermore, many companies have on-campus presentations that students can attend. After the presentation, students can drop off their resumes and chat with the employees from the company. USC also has on-campus recruiting through ConnectSC that allows students to sign up for interviews with companies and they actually come to USC and interview the student as opposed to the student driving to their office. Throughout the year, all engineers receive emails from Viterbi AND their department with internship and job opportunities. Many students never read these emails and usually delete them as soon as they see them in their inbox, which is unfortunate.

Do you know if your son/daughter used all of the opportunities provided by USC to land an internship?

Thanks for your input. He even talked with his advisor and several of his CS professors this year but no one seemed to know anything about an internship opportunity for Freshman. They told him even Juniors were having little success. I'll have him look at the emails closer next year. Where are you working this summer and where did you find something in the past?

Did your child have a great resume ready to go at the USC job fairs? If you are not sure, why not see if the USC career placement center can review your child's resume? Did your child practice interviewing skills?

Freshman should start looking for internships around Feb according to the USC career center.

Q: What resources are available for finding internships across the
country and abroad?
* If you are looking for an internship in the United States, you
may go online to view the USC internship listings. USC is a member of an
Internship Consortium with Harvard, Yale, Stanford and Northwestern
Universities. Our online listings contain internship opportunities that
are shared by these universities. Therefore, opportunities exist for
areas near these universities.
* Search the Trojan Network
http://careers.usc.edu/trojannetwork/ , an excellent source of advice
for networking in your field. The Trojan Network is a resource of USC
alumni who have volunteered to provide career-related advice and
industry specific information to USC students, they are not internship
providers.
* Visit your academic unit and talk to advisors and professors
about finding internships.
* View online resource links to web sites dealing with
internships.
