Not sure were to post this, but I saw an investment banking subheading under "Internships, Careers, and Employment." I understand a lot of people on this forum have experience in I-Banking, and have also worked as analysts at Big Banks and other notable Wall Street Firms. I'm currently a rising sophomore in college and interested in pursing a career in I-banking(Many will be skeptical about my lack of knowledge regarding the industry). Honestly, I'm not as a familiar as other people regarding the industry, that is why I need some help. My question is, what are some banks that I can apply to for a summer internship?

I want to start compiling a list and get some more information on the companies, what do you recommend?

Also I've heard the name "boutiques" thrown a few times in this forum, could someone please explain to me what they are, and the pros and cons of working at a boutique firm?

Thanks for all the help.

NOTE I am not an investment banker. Like you, I am an undergrad aspiring to be one.

I felt the need to disclose that before you take any of my advice to heart. With that said, I would really reccomend learning more about the industry and what exactly it is like, what it entails, how to get into it, etc. before you decide to pursue it full steam. The following websites should get you started

Investment Banks that people usually pursue internships/offers at: smith and barney, Citi, goldman sachs, jp morgan, morgan stanley, barclays, Deutsche Bank, Banc of America, UBS, Lazard, houlihan lokey, Miller Buckfire BX, greenhill, evercore, Moelis, Perella, Rothschild.

Summer Analyst positions at these firms are EXTREMELY competitive. Unless you go to a target school or have a very impressive resume/GPA chances are you won’t land the position. Recruitment for these spots begin in the fall.

Also, be well aware of the hours you will be working in banking, even as a summer. I used to think " well, that’s not so bad", up until this summer , when I’ve been working in banking. I’ve worked usually from 9 to midnight ( and I left way earlier than most people in my group, mainly b/c I am a intern, and a sophomore at that). I worked weekends ( both days, from noon till around 7pm…so while my roommates were down in soho having brunch and planning trips, I was stuck putting together spreadsheets). So, yeah, jsut make sure you intern, b/c I feel it is defintiely a field that you have to try out first. I will ptrobably not go into banking after this experience ( or if I do, I would research a lot about the specific culture of the group and firm, to find out whether or not I would feel comfortable spending 98% of my time with these people). Just my 2 cents
