Is anyone out there having a hard time finding an internship? I'm a ChemE major with around a 3.3 GPA (will go up after this semester) and I haven't had anyone call me for an internship yet (applied to 18).

I have an internship offer that I can’t accept since my school is on the wacky quarter system.

What major?

Irrelevant. I’ve hardly been in school for three weeks.

I’m a Geography major.

Having a tough time myself since I don’t have any experience in the hospitality industry. Currently a Junior who will be graduating a year late.

It’s not irrelevant if you’re a freshman. I was looking for internships within the first couple months of my freshman year. You’ve got to remember that many internships choose who is going to work for them in the summer around December, and many of the job/internship fairs have already passed. It’s certainly not too late to start looking, but it’s equally not too early. Especially if you’re in a major that has a hard time finding either internships or employment in general.

Anyway, the best advice I can give is to look outside of the traditional path of your degree, especially for your first year. Many companies don’t hire freshman at all, but find the ones that do (even if they aren’t really what you want to be doing the rest of your life or what your degree is really going to be in) and get a few months of experience. Having any internship on your resume is going to be infinitely better than not having one. If all else fails get some sort of job over the summer.

This is coming from someone who has a job and does some college recruiting for it, although for full time positions and not internships.

That is probably true, I’m just saying that in my situation, it had absolutely nothing to do with my major or even my academic record, though I did have to jump through a bunch of other hoops to attract the offer.

If possible find a smaller local company to take you, and if not attempt to ‘volunteer’. You will gain a lot of project experience that will look good. The first one is the hardest to get, after I got my first internship, Ive been getting interview requests left and right.
