Interplay With 5 College Consortium Schools

Students- How much interplay-- by that I mean taking classes at Amherst, Smith, Mount Holyoke or Hampshire or socializing/parties -- have you experienced? Are you invited to parties at the other schools on a regular basis? Do students from the smaller LAC's attend athletic events at UMass, e.g,. football, basketball, and/or baseball? Are there specific UMass classes that are attractive and populated by students from the other 4 Consortium schools? Anecdotally, I am advised that approx half the Amherst students take Consortium classes with the most frequent number being 2.

Curious and Thanks

ps-- I'm a father of a prospective student to a couple Consortium schools. D trying to make a final decision.

also wondering –
how easy/difficult it is to register for classes at the other schools

ispf72-- I guess these kids don’t get out much-- classes or to party. Geeeeeesh, pretty
sad.

If I recall correctly, registering for courses on other campuses wasn’t too difficult. The primary blocker was usually timing. Schools run on different schedules. Depending on how flexible your major is, you might not have enough time on any given day to get to another campus and sit through an entire lecture. It would cost you at least 2 class periods on local campus. That being said, it has been done. Students travel between campuses for free and can do so at regular intervals using the bus system.

I’m not sure how straightforward it is for students going in other direction (Other 4 to UMass). I do remember seeing students from the other colleges in some of my smaller classes and only because we had to introduce ourselves at the beginning of the semester.

The UMass-Amherst forum has never been particularly high volume. There aren’t a lot of current students that hang out here on a regular basis. Maybe they are all too busy going to class or parties.

My S, who is a junior at UMass, has never taken a class at one of the other schools. He is an engineering major, though, which is not offered at the other schools to my knowledge.

minute and richenough-- Thanks for the input. Not an attack but I’m surprised the UMass CC site is not popping more. Over the last 6 months I’ve spent a little time corresponding with forum members on the University of Florida CC site and it is hopping.

Thanks for the thoughts on courses at other Five College Consortium schools.
