Interracial Dating at Southern Schools

I'm a black female and I'm looking at Sweet Briar College (a women's college) in Virginia as a top choice. SBC is 2% Black, 2% Hispanic, and 1% Asian and not to mention, it's an extremely small school with 700 something students (500 something on campus due to the large percentage of juniors that study abroad). Most SBC women go to Hampden-Sydney College (a conservative men's college, SBC's brother school), Virginia Tech, and Washington and Lee to meet guys and party. Already knowing that Virginia is a conservative, known to be racist in some areas, I was wondering how would interracial dating be at those schools listed?

Thanks!

Here we go....

"Already knowing that Virginia is a conservative, known to be racist in some areas..."

Ok.. how do you already know this? Are we going back to civil war days where Virginia was on the confederate side? I don't consider Virginia as southern.. Virginia is East Coast.. southern states are like Texas, Georgia, etc. I used to live in Maryland which is one state north of Virginia.. there were lots of interracial couples at my school.. nobody cared. I can't speak about the schools that you specifically mentioned, I think this question would be better asked on the boards for those schools, but I don't think it'd be an issue as long as you're ok with it, and the person you're dating is ok with it.

I went to Virginia Tech and Im asian. I see plenty of interacial dating. I've never encountered any racism here or anytime in my life.

First, Virginia is southern in language and culture when you get into the 70% of the state that isn't Northern Virginia.

Second, Virginia is conservative, and SBC is in a conservative area.

Third, I wouldn't expect any problems. Young people in Virginia usually don't care about interracial dating.

When I visited W&M (Willaimsburg, Virginia) I actually saw several interracial couples on campus. There seemed to be a really large African American population compared to UVa in Charlottesville and even a lot of colleges I visited in MD. My mom works in Northern VA, McLean...In none of those areas did I ever get a racist or even "southern" vibe. I don't know what more rural areas are like, however.

I consider VA, along with MD and PA, to be "mid-Atlantic" demographically and as far as race relations go...it's not like, say, the boonies in central Florida or something. Especially being in college I think the atmosphere will be really liberal and accepting.

The OP... whatever. Let ignorance foster.

I'm a student at Washington and Lee - there is no such problem here - and I am certain that there wouldn't be a problem at VA Tech either.

HSC is VERY white. good luck. well if worst comes to worst you could always go to college in GA (moorehouse is there)

EDIT

i didn't mean to sound offensive, if that'[s how it sounded

EDIT

its so cool that your looking into SBC, again best of luck

Oh for the love god when will blacks stop with this crap??? It's like they think the entire world hates them because of the color of their skin. Sorry for the rant I am black by the way but im just so sick and tired of them pulling the race card on every damn thing.

it is not the "race" card. its an honest question

when you have a southern school that unitl a few years ago banned interracial dating and few in the state thought it was wrong enough to say, hey, not a good idea, it makes people wonder

sorry if talking about racism, which is not dead, in this country upsets
people

I'm from Virginia and I've always noticed the whole "division" within Virginia. Northern Va is a lot different compared to the Southern parts of Virginia. Most people in my part of Virginia take pride in being apart of the "South" or the old Confederacy...whatever you want to call it.

As far as interracial dating, most people in college really don't care...I guess it's all about stepping out of the box. I'm black and I could really care less what people thought of me and who I dated. To Kenshi, I'm really sorry if you think WE pull the race card on every thing.

HAHA DrumnDukie's comment made me laugh.

This is actually a very valid question for a minority when choosing a college... VA isnt all that southern in mindset. My sister goes to LSU and racism is still in full swing there so believe me this is a VERY valid question. My sister has told me that if she had known about the problems in baton rouge she never wouldve attended LSU

It's a valid question. However, she should have extended it to the entire country. Racism exists in every state. Kenshi, you're "confused" and/or lying about your ethnicity.

yes racism exists in every state but it is more evident in certain regions. In the midwest/northeast/west you rarely see anyone who is openly racist. In the mid-south/deep south a lot of people are openly racist and dont even attempt to hide it

this is a quality question, and I see no reason for people to flame her for asking it. I am from California and visited Virginia for 1 week and the racism was more evident there then where I live. but when racism was displayed it wasn't college aged people.

So how do you folks define "racism?" Are you witnessing lynchings all over the place or what?

well at an LSU football game, a group of college-aged kids rode past in a pick-up and spit on my sister and a group of her friends and called them the "N" word, i consider that racist.

Several of my Hispanic and black friends have had rocks thrown through their windows accompanied by squealing tires and racially propeled threats and insults. And that's coming from a very wealthy suburban community outside of Atlanta. Racism is horrific here, and that extends to other minorities such as Jews (like myself), Catholics (but to a lesser extent), Muslims, Hindus, gays, lesbians... anyone outside of the WASP mentality.

It's different in all parts of the South and I also don't consider VA altogether part of the South, but that's the reason why I would never even consider going to a Southern school.
