Barnard sent me an email regarding an alumni interview day on campus. I was wondering how important the interview is to Barnard admissions. I feel that I am a rather strong applicant already (2320 SAT, Rank 2/141, 4.0 GPA, strong ECs/Recs)…will the interview be a pertinent factor in the adcoms admissions decision? I know some schools use the interview merely as an opportunity for the student to ask questions. Then again, I live in proximity to campus…I’ve visited on various occasions, including open house and the NYC College weekend…so I don’t think it seems I have lack of interest…

I would caution that there are no absolute guarantees these days, only probabilities; I personally know a 2310 + 2 800s applicant who was waitlisted. But lack of interview was not the cause there, since she actually had it, though she lived far away. They might have picked up issues concerning fit, or something. Who knows.

Sort of depends on whether they view the interview as solely FYI, or if there's also a "demonstrated interest" component, an additional opportunity to make your case and prove that you fit, going the other way.

I don't know this answer, conclusively.

My own opinion is, if you're local and you want to go someplace you do everything. If you don't, despite it being relatively easy to do, then this means you don't care that much. If you don't care that much don't be completely shocked if they don't either.

But that's just my own completely uninformed opinion.

haha, dont get cocky. i had a 2320 and a 4.2 gpa, and i still did an interview. if you care, do the interview. dont you want to know more about the school/the kinds of people that went there/ let them get to know more about you???

Yes...I do want to know more...and so I requested an interview. I just was kind of curious as to how Barnard uses interviews lol...
and, um, yeah...ill reevaluate my level of cockiness too =)

im so glad you requested an interview!!! i didnt mean to sound standoffish with the cockiness comment haha. btw, i go to barnard and it's awesome. if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Probably not too much because most of the on site interviewers are Barnard seniors. However, it didn't hurt that the interviewer was reading Vanity Fair, just as my daughter was, in preparation for seeing the movie. That was an instant bond between them, and my daughter immediately felt like a Barnard woman, which she now is.

Look at it this way: They have to use some criteria to sort, so anything that helps the adcom choose you has to be helpful.

My S was never able to get an interview at his school, but the adcom there explicitly stated that interviews were not used for evaluative purposes. Barnard does not make the same assertion.
