Interview Advice

Has anybody ever interviewed for a combined medical program before who would be willing to share a bit about the experience? How pressurized is the discussion? How many interviewers do you have at a time? Do they quiz you about your medical knowledge/experience?
I know this must be different at every school, but honestly any direction would be helpful.

I'm interviewing at:
University of Kentucky
Caltech/UCSD Medical Scholars (UCSD Med College)
Union-AMC and RPI-AMC (Albany Medical College)
Case Western
and maybe UConn CPiM

Did you get a notification for UConn CPim about an interview or have you not heard anything because I’m still waiting. If you got a notification when did you get it and how (email/snail mail)? Thanks, much appreciated
As for your q’s

Try not to be nervous (easier said than done I know), but if you are confident you won’t feel pressure. Honestly, I have been nervous prior but once I got there I’ve been fine. Most bs/md interviews are one-on-one and that has been my experience. Definitely questions about medical experience will come, they want to know what has allowed you to take this step and decide to become a doctor. I have not received any medical knowledge questions directly, but in relation to my activities or interests it’s good to throw in some knowledge. It’s definitely possible, so be prepared as you can.
As you said interview styles vary by the school but I will give you my experience. Of course, they are going to know why you want to be a doctor. If the program is accelerated they may ask you about why you want an accelerated program. They’ll ask you about things you mentioned on your application, so review it. They may ask you what is your interest within medicine like what do you hope to specialize in? They also may ask about whether you want to be more of a research physician or a patient care one. They may ask about why this undergrad school or medical school.

Union-AMC and RPI-AMC are 2 of the more specialized programs out there
Union-AMC–Leadership in Medicine they want to see why and how you are a leader and will be able to adapt to the changing medical policy for example the healthcare bill. They require you to minor in some sort of humanity and study abroad so there may be a question about this. Make sure you have some knowledge about the Healthcare Bill that was passed. Expect ethical questions at AMC for this leadership in medicine and there maybe ethical questions at other schools too, so be prepared. Ethical topics–stem cell research, euthanasia, genetic engineering, etc.
Brush up on current events for all interviews it’s good to show them you are well rounded and know about the world. Check out the AMA website it’ll help you learn about contemporary medical issues and bioethics.

Be knowledgeable about the medical school/undergraduate school and their philosophy, it will help you connect with the interviewers. Also try to portray to them that this program is just a start for you and that an MD comes with limitless possibilities. Many think if you get into one of these programs, that’s it you are done working hard, but show that know MD is just an important step in your career path

RPI-AMC–Physician-Scientist program this is 7-yr so they may ask about that. The big thing with this is research; if you have done research play that up here. If not be knowledgeable about the current research in your area of interest and talk about how you want to be involved it in.

Based on the programs you’re going to you must have some great stats, could you post them please?

Sorry for the long response, I wanted to be thorough

Best of luck man

definitely have a good grasp of who you are and what you want to do with medicine…
know good answers to questions like:
what are your strengths and weaknesses?
what is the best quality you possess that will allow you to be a good physician?
when did you decide that medicine was what you want to do?

make sure you know what to say in these situations without sounding like you’re reading a script…
overall keep a smile on (when appropriate) and let your personality shine through. if you have a good positive energy you’ll be extremely successful! good luck!

Thank you both so much – I had thought of the medical ethics questions but not about the health care bill, so I’ll look up more about that now. vbhasin1, I haven’t heard anything at all about UConn CPiM yet (not even a message saying they received my app) but somebody on one of these threads said you could hear anytime until late February so there’s still time.

Here are my stats:
SAT: 2400
GPA: 97.3 unweighted
APs: Bio (5), US History (5), currently taking Lit, Chem, Physics, Calc
Research: summer internship, lots of science fair, presentation at national conference
ECs: math team captain, academic decathlon captain, some honor society leadership, about 700 total volunteer hours (hospital and library), band, track (on and off)

No problem m123456m,
jjtheairplane called uconn and they said that they have all already interviewed all the applicants they are going to. refer to this thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/multiple-degree-programs/1080572-uconn.html</a></p>

Don’t why they would reject you–amazing stats, but you already have some interviews at great places.

Best of Luck
