My daughter's first choices are both East Coast schools that offer West Coast interviews, presumably with alumni. The schools are Brown and Yale.
We really can't afford to fly East right now, but we also don't want to damage her chances by opting to interview here. Any thoughts?

Brown does not conduct interviews on campus. Yale does conduct a very limited number of on-campus interviews, but that process is now complete. If these schools have an alumni network available in your area, the alumni interviews will be just fine! Good luck to your daughter!

Our D did her Yale interview locally with an alumni.

Thank you.
To emgamac - Did you find that the local interview was weighed just as heavily as if she had flown to New Haven to interview?

The majority of Yale’s interviews are alumni ones, so it’s definitely fine for your D to do one close to home.

Nothing wrong with an alumni interview, it’s the norm. I don’t think it makes any difference at the schools you are talking about (and obviously at Yale, only alumni interviews exist.) I don’t think most interviews make too much difference one way or another.

D did local interviews with alumni for Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Carnegie Mellon and one local interview with an Adcom for U of Rochester. Had wonderful experiences with all of them except the Yale interviewer. He had her come to the law firm where he was a senior partner and kept her waiting and waiting. She said they never really connected. She couldn’t get a chuckle out of him. Turns out he was the uncle of a classmate. He told the classmate that the interviews do not make or break a candidate. She did not get into Harvard, Yale or Princeton. Accepted to CMU and U of R. Attending Stanford, where they only are just piloting alumni interviews and she did not interview.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Here’s some info about the Yale interview process; can’t speak for Brown.
