Interview attire for casual on-campus interview

My daughter is meeting with someone about the honors college she plans to apply to. They say it’s for informational purposes only, rather than a formal admissions interview. It’s going to be a cold, rainy day and we’ll be wandering around the campus the rest of the day. Would casual attire be fine (nice jeans/leggings) or would she have to dress up a bit more?

Can she wear smart jeans and a decent top? I would not try to look formal, but I think leggings are not a good idea. Being neat and presentable is what she should aim for. If she has a pair of tall boots to wear with her jeans, that would be stylish and sensible. If she doesn’t, don’t worry. She should just avoid looking like a slob.

Agree with the above. I’d probably avoid leggings and opt for nice dark wash jeans or even a pair of black jeans if she has them paired with nice shirt (perhaps with a cardigan if it is cool out). I’d wear shoes/boots rather than sneakers. Even for an informational interview it is best to look neat and clean.

Thank you. She could do a nice pair of jeans, nice sweater and boots that are comfortable enough to walk in all day. No Converse, no leggings, no sweatshirt.

That sounds perfect.

I do alumni admissions interviews: The main thing to keep in mind is not to have the clothing be distracting. Flip flops and shorts? No. 3 piece suit? no.
So what you describe is good.

Thanks, @bopper. I do alumni interviews too and I agree for actual interviews. The reason I posed the question is because this is more like an information session–there may be other students there as well, and the college stresses that it isn’t used in any way in admissions decisions. I’ll be there too and frankly was hoping for maximum comfort on a cold, rainy day! But I’ll suck it up and try to look presentable. :))

You just never know when making a good first impression will be important. Maybe throw comfy clothes in a backpack and change after the meeting. Good luck!
