Hopefully this isn't a silly question, but:

I am a current junior, and I am scheduled to interview at JHU over my Spring Break.

I was just curious about the dress code. What is appropriate for such an interview? I've heard numerous responses to this question regarding alumni interviews for other colleges that basically say that it depends on the setting (Starbucks = casual, but nice, etc).

So what are the on-campus interviews like? Very casual, or should I dress business-casual?

I’m an interviewer and I would say that the minimum attire should be khakis (or nice jeans, if you’re so inclined, but I think khakis look nicer) and a polo shirt. I have no idea what the equivalent of that would be for girls. Keep in mind that your interviewer is going to be student who is likely between classes, so we’re not going to wearing super-formal attire. I’ve seen a lot of people who come with sports coats or full suits, which looks great but it’s not necessary if that’s not what you’re comfortable in. I’ve also seen people in t-shirts and shorts, and it doesn’t give that great of an impression.

I interviewed there last august, and I wore a nice sundress with a sweater over, since it was summer, although chilly in the office. For my interviews in the winter for other schools, I wore black slacks and a button down shirt. I think it was probably ok.

I usually wear my nice black slacks (but they’re not like omg $3000 slack, just like a nice pair) and a dress shirt. If you wear a tie, as my mom said, “they’ll know your parents dressed you.”

I usually roll up my sleeves because it feels more casual while still looking formal. Plus its just more comfortable.

I’d say that unless the jeans are really nice, I wouldn’t go with them.

Thanks for the advice! I would definitely consider wearing a sundress and sweater, only I’ll be going over Spring Break and I suspect that it’ll be a little chilly (I’m in Colorado, and we’re in the middle of a blizzard right now). I’ll be sure to check the weather ahead of time, but I think my black slacks, buttoned shirt, and vest sounds appropriate given what you’ve both said. Thanks again for all of the input.

LOL… I love it “they’ll know your parents dressed you.” Aint it the truth!!!

Son has a standard dress uniform: Khakis and white t-shirt under a button down shirt. THis way he can tuck it in without looking too “geek” which is what he thinks happens when you tuck in a polo shirt. I don’t suggest flip flops/Sandals anytime for boys unless you take care of your feet. Fine for walking around campus… bad if your sitting in proximity to your interviewer.
