Interview Attire

I'm sure this question has been asked a thousand times but I can't seem to find an answer. I have in an interview today with a Chicago alum at a Starbucks in New York City. What's appropriate to wear? I'm guessing not a full suit but i'm also guessing jeans and a tee are out?

I wore jeans and a tee for my coffee shop interview and it seemed to go well.

Something like khakis and a button-up would be fine (and real shoes, if you've got them). You want to be dressed about the same as the interviewer. If it's during the week the alum is probably coming straight from work, but if it's on a weekend he or she will probably be dressed more casually. You definitely don't have to wear a full suit, but you may want to be slightly more dressy if you know that he'll be dressed up. On the other hand, if you went in wearing a suit and your interviewer is dressed casually, it's bound to make him feel more uncomfortable.

I'm just telling you that because it's good stuff to keep in mind. In this case, just go with what you feel is right. I'd say no jeans and no casual t-shirts. Khakis or some other nice looking pants (i.e. not cargo pants) with a polo, button-up, or sweater would be great no matter what, in my opinion.

Kind of the rule of thumb for any sort of interview is to dress one level above the position for which you are applying. You are applying for a position as a college student. : ) So think about what a college student would wear and dress one level above. Maybe nice casual or something... you don't want to look formal but you don't want to look trashy either. The interviewer's first impression of you is formed in the first 10 seconds, and since most of that is visual, you definately want to look your best.

Just dress casual.
