Can anyone who has been through the prep school interview process tell me how kids and their parents typically dress. My daughter wants to wear corduroys and a sweater to her Choate interview, but I am concerned that this is a bit too casual. Any advice? Thanks!

I would follow the school’s dress code, which you should be able to find on Choate’s website. We found it easiest to declare certain clothes “interview outfits,” and to make an effort to keep them clean and ready-to-go. In general, boys wore jackets, ties, and khakis. Girls wore blouses and skirts, dresses, or blouses and “nice” slacks.

Good luck–I still remember the fight over the appropriate attire for college interviews I had with my mother decades ago.

One further suggestion: Most visits will include a tour. It’s winter. Choose shoes (or boots) which will allow you to walk over hill and dale for an hour.

I had 2 kids interview at Choate last year - daughter wore dress slacks and sweater, son wore khaki pants, jacket and tie (both their “interview outfits”) - wore these outfits to all interviews and never felt out of place, underdressed, or overdressed

We bought blazer, blouse and skirts (with tights) and Uggs. Sweater would also work.

At one school she wore her normal designer type jeans. It was below freezing and heavy snow. The dean admission complimented her on being smart and dressing for the weather.

Thanks so much for your responses! I actually gave Choate a call and they agreed that a sweater and corduroys would be fine and emphasized the comfortable walking shoes for the tour. Their only rule is no jeans or gym clothes, so I guess Choate’s less formal than I thought! Many thanks!

cba, How did your kids’ the interviews go?? Any suggestions?? What kinds of things did they ask at the parent interviews. I think I’m far more concerned than my daughter is!

LM - their interviews went very well - (and they were both accepted) - from what I remember since it was a year ago and everything is a blur by now, the admissions officers were young and very personable - and conducted very upbeat interviews - the parent interview was also very relaxed - they talked about my kids’ activities, what choate had to offer… nothing out of the ordinary
