Haverford offers students the choice of an admissions office interview or alumni interview. Does it matter which you choose?
If an office interview is a practical option for you, I would much prefer that over an alumni interview. My daughter’s alumni interviewer for Princeton pretty much said up front that he wasn’t quite sure what to ask or discuss. Since then I’ve heard from interviewers at other colleges, that the process lacks consistency, which makes the results less applicable.
I believe, many times the result of an alumni interview might be informal to disorganized, and the outcome “neutral” at best. For the college, if anything, they might catch any red flags.
In comparison, an admission officer will be able to clarify impressions based on what they read in your file and either way, the interview will be directly relevant.
As an alumni interviewer for Haverford, I would recommend having an interview with the admissions office if you are able to arrange it. If not, I think you should be in good hands with an alum. We are trained and while we don’t have to follow a script, we all have to fill out an interview report that has several questions to ensure that we all cover areas of interest to the college. Good luck.
