My “current event” questions aren’t to dig up a political bent. If the kid says she wants to study biomed to be a physician, I’ll ask what she knows about Obamacare and the arguments pro/con or the controversy surrounding ebola medical workers, etc. I’m looking for someone whose universe doesn’t simply encompass their little high school and their dinner table conversation. I find out what interests them, and then gauge the depth of that with some softball questions. If they swing and miss, then that’s notable to me. Sorry-- that’s 100% fair territory for me.

hahaha. I guess that’s a bad example (I’ve never really asked a student about obamacare). But I do recall asking one about stem cell research (which was a huge referendum in my state a few years back).
