Interview Experiences

Had my interview Friday evening, and it definitely could've gone better. I mean, it wasn't necessarily bad, but it wasn't that great. I think a lot of it has to do with nerves and the fact that I expected it to be conversational (it wasn't). How will a less-than-great interview affect me?

It wasn't conversational? How was it?
I had mine saturday morning.

It was very question-and-answerish, and there weren't many questions. It was basically "what do you do outside of class", "are there any things you do outside of school activities" (that one scared me because the way he asked it made me sound like a tool), probably another one or two I don't remember (but they somehow came out of the conversation), and then "do you have any questions for me" (I had a few, so we spent about half an hour with that one, but it still felt very early for it).

It was particularly scary because my interview was waived; I emailed asking for an interview anyway, and they found an interviewer about 2 or 3 hours away; when I called him, he said he was planning on coming to the city I live in anyway and he'd interview me at my house after he settled into his hotel. I felt like it may have gone as quickly as it did because he wanted to get back to the hotel...

My interview was very fast - 40 minutes. I didn't have a lot of questions for him and he asked the basics.

Can you tell MIT that you dont want an interview at all? Is having an interview mandatory?

No...interviews are not mandatory. Yet the statistics show that it really does help.

Besides i dont think it could possibly hurt you, I dont think the interviewer is going to write "THIS KID SHOULD NOT GO, HES NOT COOL" on his evaluation...

I think they remember what it was like for them....Give it a chance, besides how often do you get to meet really intelligent people in daily life :)

My interview was very so-so, in my opinion. I found myself saying "I don't know" a lot, and my interviewer spent a lot of time telling me random stories (not even about MIT.... like historical anecdotes and things aout my hometown and random other crap). I came out of it feeling OK, but not spectacular.

In the end, I got in, so you shouldn't neseccarily worry about your interview if it doesn't go wonderfully.

Thanks, everyone. JLP's post is especially comforting.

Mine went great. He said it would take about 40 minutes and we talked for about an hour and half- that has to be good, right?

We discussed everything I did and all outside of school, and I made sure to sneak in that MIT was my top choice of course :) (which it is, btw). I talked about what I love to do, and why I'd choose MIT over other schools. Then he talked about UROP, IAP, frats, courseload, etc. All good stuff.

I had a terrible interview. I'll keep it at that.

dam I have mine the 11th.....dont know whether to be worried or not lol

mine in two days

What I meant to imply was that though my interview didn't go as well as I had hoped, I'm still here.

Don't worry about it, and let the conversation flow.

ok thx for the advice :)

mine on saturday. before homecoming.

my person's gone (out of town) until october 12th. It seems like all of you had the interview already. I hope it doesn't hurt that I do the interview quite a bit later than everybody else.

mine interview is this weekend

It shouldn't hurt; after all, the deadline's not for at least another month or so (if you're applying EA). If you make the deadline, you'll be ok.

I haven't scheduled my interview yet. Did anybody set up your interview time via email or should I call? People always tell me I sound angry over the phone.

I havent even talked to my alum over the phone yet and we're scheduled for our interview on the 11th

I interviewed him a while ago to see how many people he was interviewing and he said none. So we just kept communicating via email.
