Interview fears..

I have an alumni interview this Sunday with a Midd. It will be my fourth interview. My first interview was with Reed (which went rather smoothly), second with Whitman (which was awesome), Lewis and Clark (whch was awesome too), Oberlin (which was my best) and Grinnell, my most recent, which was kind of bad...All of this to say that I've had several interviews and am fairly aware of the interview process.

Still, Middlebury College is essentially my top choice. I am concerned for a few reasons:

1.) One of my good friends has also applied to Middlebury. Apparently, Middlebury contacts all applicants who are near an alumni for an interview. He was contacted, but I was not. I had to call Middlebury and ask to schedule one in order to get one, so...

2.) ...my interview is happening kind of late. My interviewer told me on the phone that, due to short notice, my interview evaluation would be sent to Middlebury past some kind of deadline.

3.) When Middlebury has visited my school, the representative has always had my friend on her mailing list and always recalls him, though I too have visited the school and have show an intense interest.

4.) Middlebury is such a prestigious and highly competitive school!

Lately, I just feel like Middlebury doesn't see me in a similar light as my friend, though I've shown just as much interest and have visited the campus, etc. My friend is, to say it frankly, a more competitive applicant than I am, so this may explain the strange course of events. Still, I'm concerned..

Anyway, it takes all of this to say that I am most nervous for my Middlebury interview. There are a variety of pressures that are making me nervous! Are there are any tips you could give in regard to a Middlebury interview? Any questions they may ask?

Thank you!

I know it's easier said than done, but don't be nervous - and do not think of your friend or your friend's chances while you are having your interview.

Possible questions: Tell me about your high school. What activity do you enjoy the most and why? Who is your favorite teacher and why? Why Middlebury? What would you like to study? What would you bring to the college community? What do you do in the summer? What has been the biggest obstacle/challenge you faced in high school, and how did you handle it?

Don't worry that it seems late in the game - the deadline for alum interviews has been extended, so there is time.

What do I look for when I interview? That my questions and your answers develop into a conversation. That you have committed yourself to an activity. That you will enjoy being a part of the college community. That you have researched the school and applied because the fit is right, not because of magazine rankings.

Be prepared to ask a few questions of your own, because I can guarantee you will be given the opportunity. For example: Why did you pick Middlebury? How did your education there prepare you for your career? What do students like to do on the weekends?

I think you are showing great interest to Middlebury by having an alumni interview - half the students I contacted this year did not even bother to reply to my email/phone call, or said they did not have any questions so did not want to interview. We let the college know if a student does not respond or does not want contact.

Also, please do not worry if an alum did not contact you - sometimes emergencies or time constraints arise and interviews unfortunately go to the back burner. I think it's great you contacted the college to follow up!

Good luck with your interview!

edit, delete, ill pm that question instead
