Hi all,

Just got a phone call from a Cornell alumni and we arranged for an interview on Jan 23rd. We're meeting at Pacific Coffee Company i.e. a relatively chill place but right now and even then I don't think I'll be able to chill. Any tips anyone? It'll be much appreciated!

Cheers

be prepared for the worst i suppose. i dont know if youve been to a few alumni interview but some of them can be fun, while some of the them can be awkward…
it really depends on the person who will interview you.

i had my share of both. my harvard interview was short and awkward, my vanderbilt interview was fun, while my princeton one was by far the best. i have yet to have my cornell interview this weekend so im excited!

to be honest, bring a copy of your resume. i learned that this makes the person happy. and make sure that you express the reasons why you want to go to cornell. do something that will make you stand out…

i think the reason why my princeton one was the best by far was because i did research on the alumni prior meeting him… like seriously, i read his college thesis. and i learned that we have the same favorite author, and when i mentioned my love for the said author during the interview, i saw a grin on his face…

so dont be nervous, have fun, except the worst.

Absolutely no reason to be nervous. These alumni interviews have no official bearing on whether or not you are accepted. They’re meant to be an opportunity for you ask questions and learn about Cornell. I think the alumni give a report back to the university, but it doesn’t have a negative affect on your application. I think the report is so that the university can learn about their applicants in general, not actually evaluate your interviewing skills.

i never made a resume…should i make one for the interview? i had a columbia one, but she told me not to bring a resume…

do resumes REALLY “make the person happy?”

^
it depends on the person. but it doesnt hurt if you give them one.

with my princeton alumni interview, i gave the alumni a copy of my resume and he said that it will help him put more things into his report. so i suppose that works on my advantage.

i had my cornell interview back in november for ED and it actually went really well (considering that i got in!) mikeyc765 is completely right–the purpose of the interview is for you to learn more about cornell. i didnt bring my resume because the interviewer didnt require it. they ask general questions like what is a main activity that you took part in over the summer, what are your strengths, and three adjectives that describe yourself. i had a really nice person who actually gave me some great insight on the school (about study abroad and research opportunities). just search stuff that you are interested in on their website (aka music programs, other activities…) and get their opinion on it. dont stress at all! an interview can only help you. good luck!

I also have an interview scheduled at a chill coffee place. Do I dress casually or professionally?

go business casual
